How we work it out

Ceiling area in square metres divided by a batt pack's own coverage gives the number of packs to buy, rounded up since a partial pack still means buying the whole thing. Multiply packs by the pack price and you've got a DIY supply cost, priced from Earthwool ceiling batts at Bunnings. A professional install adds labour on top, typically $15 to $25 a square metre all up: easy roof access sits toward the low end, a tight manhole, low pitch or multi-storey roof pushes toward the high end.

Worked example: a 120 m² ceiling in R4.0 batts (10.1 m² per 15-pack, $105.95 a pack): 120 ÷ 10.1 = 11.9, rounded up to 12 packs, 12 × $105.95 = about $1,271 in batts alone. Getting the same ceiling professionally installed runs roughly $1,800 to $3,000, materials and labour together.

Which R-value do I need?

Sustainability Victoria, the Victorian Government's own energy-efficiency agency, sets a minimum of R3.5 for bulk ceiling insulation across the Victorian climate, rising to R5.0 in alpine regions where winters run harder. That's a reasonable floor for most of southern and eastern Australia. R4.0 is a common step up and the mid-range batt most hardware stores stock, and R6.0 is the highest rating readily sold, worth it in the coldest climates or if you only want to do this once. DIY or get it installed?

Ceiling batts are one of the more DIY-friendly insulation jobs, no special tools, just careful handling in a roof space. Two safety checks are worth doing first, straight from Sustainability Victoria's own guidance: keep insulation clear of downlights (50mm above and 100mm to the side for standard fittings, a full 200mm above older halogen downlights) and don't cover exposed wiring you're not sure about, since old wiring can overheat once it's insulated over. Have a licensed electrician check the wiring first if the roof space hasn't been touched in a while, and turn the power off at the switchboard before anyone goes up there. If that gives you pause, or the roof space is tight, steep or multi-storey, it's a straightforward job to hand to a professional installer instead.
