What was actually measured
Most air fryer cost comparisons online multiply a nameplate wattage by an assumed cooking time, which is the one method our own oven calculator warns against: an oven's 2.5 to 3.5 kW plate is what it draws while heating up, not what it averages once it reaches temperature and starts cycling its element on and off. CHOICE avoided that by cooking real meals and metering both appliances: sausages with roast vegetables, a tray of frozen snacks, and a family-sized frozen apple pie, each cooked once in a fan-forced oven and once in an air fryer. The oven was preheated where the recipe needed it, the air fryer was not, and both were timed to the same finished result.
CHOICE published the minutes and the cents at its own 32¢/kWh rate. Divide one by the other and you get the energy each meal actually used, which is the number worth keeping: a kilowatt-hour is the same thing in Hobart as it is in Adelaide, and the cents are not. So the table below takes CHOICE's energy figures and re-prices them on the reference rate for wherever you happen to live.
What this costs, state by state
The tray of frozen snacks from that test, cooked once in the oven and once in the air fryer, priced on each state's own reference electricity rate instead of the single rate CHOICE used. Both columns come from CHOICE's own metered energy for that meal, not from our oven calculator's 1.0 kWh-an-hour figure, which is a different measurement and is reconciled further down. This is the air fryer’s best result of the three in proportional terms, using 24% of the oven’s energy against 35% on the apple pie, its weakest. Measured in kilowatt-hours saved rather than percentages the order changes, and all three meals are in the table further down.

The gap is mostly the size of the box
An air fryer is a small fan-forced oven with the fan running hard in a cavity a fraction of the size. There is far less air and far less metal to bring up to temperature before any heat reaches the food, so it is ready in a minute or two while an oven wants ten to fifteen before you put anything in. Cooking finishes sooner too, because the same heat is being pushed around a much smaller space. The two effects stack, and that is why the metered gap above is a multiple and not a few percent. That explanation is ours rather than CHOICE's: CHOICE measured the difference, and the reason given here is our reading of it.
Why our oven figure and CHOICE's do not match
CHOICE's roast implies an oven pulling about 1.6 kWh an hour, while our oven calculator uses 1.0 kWh an hour. Both are right for what they describe: the calculator's figure is a moderate baking temperature in a typical fan-forced oven, and CHOICE was roasting hotter in an older one. An oven's real draw moves with its temperature, its age and how well its door still seals, so treat any single oven figure as a starting point and check it against your own bill. For your own estimate, start from our calculator's 1.0 kWh an hour if you mostly bake at moderate temperatures, and add about 60% to it if you roast hot in an older oven, which is exactly the distance between the two figures here. The same caution applies to the air fryer side, since CHOICE tested one machine of each.
What undoes the saving: batch size, and what you paid for the thing
Nothing here says an oven ever cooks a given tray of food for less. What it does is cook more of it at once, so the question is how many air fryer loads a single oven load is worth. Capacity is the limit, and it deserves a number instead of a shrug. The oven cooked that tray of frozen snacks in one go for 1.06 kWh. The air fryer did the same job for 0.25 kWh in a basket that holds a good deal less. So how many basketfuls before the saving is gone? About four. Run the basket four times over and you have spent what the oven spent once, and anything under that leaves the air fryer ahead. The catch is that plenty of cooking never gets the chance: a Sunday roast for six needs the shelf space, and no number of batches will make a basket hold it.
This page prices electricity and nothing else. The annual figures here all assume the same thing: three of those frozen-snack trays a week, every week, on your state's reference rate, which comes to roughly $35 a year saved in the Australian Capital Territory at the bottom and $48 in South Australia at the top. That is the frozen-snack tray. Of the three meals the sausages and vegetables saved the fewest kilowatt-hours, and the same three-a-week habit on that meal saves $30 to $41 a year instead, which is the bottom of the honest range. Three a week is CHOICE’s own cadence for its cooking-appliance running-cost figures, not a guess of ours, and the dollars are rounded because a test of one machine does not support them to the cent. An air fryer is also a purchase. The price on the box moves too much for this page to quote a market figure, so work it as arithmetic: an air fryer bought for $120 pays itself back in about two and a half years at the South Australian saving and about three and a half at the ACT one, and any other price scales the same way. Divide what yours cost by the saving for your own state. It is worth keeping the figure in proportion as well: heating and cooling, hot water and the fridge between them account for well over half a typical Australian power bill, so this is real money without being the biggest lever in the house. The kWh figures are ours, worked back from the cents CHOICE published at the 32¢/kWh rate it stated, then rounded, which is what lets the table above price the same test on your state’s rate instead of CHOICE’s. The oven times include preheating where CHOICE preheated; the air fryer was not preheated.

This one runs on the frozen-snack tray specifically, the biggest proportional gap of the three above. Three trays a week for a year works out at roughly $54 of oven against $13 of air fryer on the New South Wales rate. The roast and the apple pie came in closer, so read the result as the best case for an air fryer in percentage terms and slide the count down if your cooking looks more like the other two rows.
Common questions
Is an air fryer cheaper to run than an oven?
Yes, on all three meals CHOICE tested. In percentage terms the win was biggest on the frozen-snack tray and smallest on the family-sized apple pie, and even the smallest came in at about a third of the oven's energy. In raw kilowatt-hours saved the pie was actually the biggest of the three, because it was the longest cook.
How much does an air fryer cost to run per hour in Australia?
Work it from the meal, because an air fryer rarely runs for a full hour. CHOICE's frozen-snack tray took 18 minutes and 0.25 kWh, which comes to about 0.83 kWh if you held it there for the hour, or roughly 23 to 32¢ depending on your state's rate.
Does the oven ever work out cheaper than the air fryer?
Yes, once the food stops fitting. The oven cooked that tray in one go, so it takes about four air fryer batches to spend the same energy. Past four basketfuls the oven is level or ahead, and for anything that needs the shelf space it is the only appliance in the argument.
Does skipping the oven preheat save much on its own?
It saves some, though not enough to close the gap. CHOICE's apple pie spent 15 of its 50 oven minutes preheating with nothing in the oven, and the air fryer still finished that meal for a third of the cost with no preheat at all. Preheating is part of why the oven is dearer, rather than the whole reason.
