The median one costs $44.71, and the priciest costs $106.60 for a screen the same size. Here are the 10 cheapest, ranked on the government’s own tested power figure at four hours a night. Where this list comes from

One source, one assumption: the on-mode power the government’s energyrating.gov.au register publishes for every television approved for sale here, priced at four hours a night plus standby for the other twenty.

The assumption is there because a television’s label does not hand you a usable yearly figure the way a fridge’s does. What the register holds is the set’s tested average power in watts, and what that costs depends entirely on how long the set is on. Four hours a night is the default the calculator on this site already uses, so a model priced here and the same model priced there agree to the dollar. The only thing between them is that this page rounds a set’s yearly kilowatt-hours to a whole number.

The class is 798 sets between 52 and 60 inches, the biggest single size group in a register of 4,723 current models, and the same band every other TV page on this site already means by “55-inch”. That is the same “biggest fair-comparison group” rule our washing machine, dishwasher, dryer and fridge league tables already use for their own classes. Every model printed below is a 55-inch set, one row per genuinely distinct model, since a handful of colour-code variants of the same panel are shown once rather than repeated.

Your own viewing hours move the dollars and barely touch the order. These are the same ten models at anything from two to eight hours a night. Below about four, one or two neighbouring positions swap, because standby counts for more when the set spends longer switched off, but nothing enters the list and nothing drops out of it. Your state does the same thing to the dollars and nothing at all to the order.

What the ranking shows, and what it doesn’t

The 10 cheapest run $20.74 to $26.57 a year. The median 55-inch set runs $44.71, and the thirstiest one registered at this size, the Samsung Electronics QA55QN700BS at 223 W, runs $106.60, 5.1 times the cheapest model on the list. That is a $86-a-year gap between two televisions of the same size showing the same programs in the same room, or $859 across ten years. No television is the big line on a power bill. This gap is still money no showroom ticket mentions, and it is settled entirely in the shop.

Panel type is not what separates them. 726 of the 798 sets in this class are LED and 72 are OLED, and their class medians land 5 kWh a year apart, about $1.62. The badge does not predict it either. Six brands hold the ten spots: FFALCON and LG take three spots each; TCL, coocaa, HISENSE and Kogan one apiece. Does this include standby power?

Yes. Every yearly figure here is four hours a night of watching plus standby for the other twenty, which is how the TV running cost calculator prices a television too. Standby is the small part of it: at the registry median draw it comes to 3 kWh a year, $0.97, on every set in the table. Two of the ten models above have never had a standby result published by the register at all, so they are priced on that same median rather than on a measurement. What if I watch more than four hours a night?

The dollars scale with the hours and the list stays put. Double the watching to eight hours a night and every figure above roughly doubles; halve it and they roughly halve. What barely moves is the order: these are the same ten models at anything from two to eight hours a night, because a set that draws less while it is on draws less however long it is on. Is OLED more expensive to run than LED at this size?

Barely. The 72 OLED sets registered in this size class carry a median 142 kWh a year against 137 for the 726 LED sets, a gap of $1.62 a year. Every model in the top 10 above happens to be LED, but that is the budget end of the market clustering there rather than a verdict on the technology, and the LED vs OLED guide linked above works the comparison through properly at both 55 and 65 inches. Can I buy all ten of these in a shop?

Most of them, yes, and the register is the reason we cannot promise all ten. It lists every television model approved for sale in Australia, which includes variants supplied to hotels, aged care and rental fleets rather than sold through retail, and it does not carry a field marking which is which. So this ranking does not either. Inventing a rule to drop models by the look of their model number would mean editing the government's list on a guess, which is worse than saying this plainly: if a set on this list is hard to find in a shop, that is why. Every model here is currently registered and currently listed as available.

Why do some rows show exactly the same yearly cost?

Because those models genuinely land on the same figure. The register publishes a whole number of watts, and two different sets can measure the same: the two models at the top both test at 42 W, and two more tie further down. They are separate registered test results from different manufacturers, not one panel listed twice. Where this site numbers ranks, tied models share one rank number rather than being split into separate places, because splitting them would invent a precision the test result does not have.
