A satellite isn't a passive extension cord
It's tempting to assume a mesh satellite barely sips power, since all it seems to do is repeat a signal. That's not what's inside one: every satellite is its own full wireless router, with its own radios and processor, doing real work coordinating the mesh and serving nearby devices, and it stays powered on continuously, exactly like the main router it's paired with. NETGEAR's own published power-consumption figures for its Orbi hardware confirm this directly rather than leave it as a guess: measured idling, its RBRE960 router draws 7.4 W and its matching RBSE960 satellite draws 7.3 W, within a rounding error of each other. That sits squarely inside the 7–10 W range this site's own router calculator already uses for a single unit, so treating each additional satellite as roughly another router's worth of continuous draw simply applies that same range a second or third time, rather than introducing a new number. It isn't a NETGEAR-specific quirk either: Tom's Guide's own wattage testing of a completely different mesh kit, Google's original Nest WiFi, measured its router at 3.7 W and its Point (Google's name for a satellite) at 4.3 W, the satellite actually drawing slightly more than the router it's paired with. Two unrelated manufacturers' own numbers agreeing that a satellite is not a low-power afterthought is a firmer base for the rule below than one brand's spec sheet on its own. The two brands don't agree on which side draws more, NETGEAR's satellite runs a touch below its router, Nest WiFi's a touch above, so the flat ‘another router's worth’ figure used below sits between those two observed ratios rather than matching either one exactly.

What this means for a mesh upgrade
Over a decade, the mesh premium in the table above adds up to real money, several hundred dollars depending on the state, but it's modest next to what a mesh kit is actually bought to fix: a dead zone at the back of the house or a weak signal upstairs that a single router genuinely can't reach. Nobody should skip a mesh upgrade they need over an extra $40 to $57 a year in running cost. The number is worth knowing for a narrower decision, though: if only one room needs fixing, a single add-on satellite covers that job for roughly the running-cost premium of one extra unit, not the two-satellite 3-pack this table prices, which is worth checking against before buying the bigger kit “to be safe”.
Common questions
Do all mesh WiFi brands draw about the same wattage?
The ratio between router and satellite is similar across brands, close to 1:1, but the absolute wattage isn't. NETGEAR's Orbi hardware idles at 7.3 to 7.4 W per unit, while Google's original Nest WiFi idles at 3.7 to 4.3 W, a little under half. A household chasing the lowest possible running cost specifically has more to gain from picking a lower-wattage kit than from choosing between a 2-node or 3-node setup of the same brand.
How does the mesh premium compare to a typical home's whole standby bill?
It's on top of the router's own already-counted standby cost, not instead of it. Is a mesh satellite the biggest hidden standby cost in a typical home?
