Why the install price alone doesn't settle it
Properly installed, a compacted base underneath, not stone tipped straight onto dirt, a basic gravel driveway costs $60 to $100 a square metre, genuinely the cheapest of the three to lay: $1,080 to $1,800 for the 18 m² strip above, against $1,620–$1,980 for standard concrete and $2,340–$3,600 for a driveway-rated paver job. That's a wider gap than our own calculator's materials-only figure suggests, because a real driveway also needs a compacted road-base layer and the labour to lay and compact it, the calculator above prices the loose stone that sits on top of that base, not the base itself.
Gravel's problem isn't the install. It's every year after it.

Install prices are supply-and-lay quotes for a vehicle-rated base, not our gravel calculator's own materials-only figure, that one prices the loose stone alone, not the compacted base underneath it or the labour to lay and edge it. The gravel top-up assumes a 25 mm reapplication, 0.63 t of blue metal, bought as 32 × 20kg bags at $8 each, since a load this small falls under most bulk suppliers' half-tonne-to-one-tonne minimum.
What a decade of top-ups actually costs
Loose stone doesn't stay where it's laid. Vehicles push it toward the edges, rain washes the fine material out from underneath, and without a weed mat or regular attention, roots find their way back up through it, which is why an unreinforced driveway needs 20–30 mm of new gravel roughly every 12 to 18 months just to look and drain the way it did on day one. For the 18 m² strip above that's 0.63 tonnes a time, and because that's well under the half-tonne-to-one-tonne minimum most bulk suppliers apply, it's usually bought the expensive way, 32 × 20kg bags at $8 each, $256 a top-up, the same bagged-versus-bulk gap our calculator's own numbers already show on a full order. Eight top-ups over ten years adds $2,048 on top of the install, and the total, $3,100–$3,850, lands above concrete's flat $1,620–$1,980 for the identical strip. The surface that looks like the obvious bargain in the calculator above isn't the cheapest one once a decade's actually been lived through.
A ground-stabilising cell grid laid under the gravel changes that math: it costs roughly $60–$80 a square metre more to install, but holds the stone in place well enough that a top-up drops to once every 3 to 5 years instead of annually, bringing its 10-year total close to plain gravel's rather than clear above it.
