The depth where weed suppression actually starts
Mulch stops weeds two ways: it blocks the sunlight seeds need to germinate, and it physically weighs down anything already pushing up from underneath. Neither job gets done at a token depth. The Quote Yard's 2026 NSW mulching guide puts it plainly: “depths below 50 mm provide cosmetic coverage but allow weed germination through the thin layer within weeks,” singling out kikuyu runners, bindii and wind-blown seeds as the culprits that find their way through a thin layer fastest. Real suppression, per the same guide and EcoMow's South East Queensland guide, starts at 75 mm and holds through 100 mm, exactly where our own calculator's 7.5–10 cm range already sits.

Deeper than 150 mm anywhere, or piled against a stem or trunk at any depth, works against the plant rather than for it, see below.
Why more isn't always better
Past the effective band, adding mulch stops helping and starts working against the bed. EcoMow's guide lists what over-mulching actually does: it impedes drainage and starves the soil of oxygen, and the resulting damp, undisturbed layer becomes pest habitat rather than a barrier against weeds. SoilYourself's Australian guide adds the waterlogging risk directly: too much mulch traps excess moisture, which “can encourage harmful diseases and kill off healthy plants”, the opposite of what a weed-suppression top-up was meant to achieve.
The one exception both guides agree on is a tree's drip line, where 100–150 mm is standard because the bare-soil area being protected is bigger and drier than a garden bed. Everywhere else, the fix for a stubborn weed patch is topping a thin spot up to the calculator's own 10 cm ceiling, not doubling the depth across the whole bed. And regardless of depth, keep mulch clear of any plant stem or tree trunk: piling it against bark, at 75 mm or 150 mm, is what actually causes the rot every source here separately warns about, not the depth of the bed itself.

Is a thicker layer of mulch always better for weed control?
No. Past about 100–150mm on a normal garden bed, mulch stops improving weed control and starts causing problems of its own, trapped moisture, oxygen-starved soil and a damp layer that shelters pests rather than blocking weeds. The deeper 100–150mm band is for a tree's drip line, not a general bed.
Does mulch depth need to change near plant stems or tree trunks?
No, but the gap does: keep mulch clear of stems and trunks at any depth. Piling mulch against bark traps moisture there and causes rot, the one mulching mistake every Australian source here warns about separately from the depth question itself.
Does a raised or edged garden bed need more mulch than a flat bed?
No, the same depth-times-area sum our mulch calculator uses applies whether or not the bed has an edge, since a layer at a given depth covers the same area with the same volume either way, an edge doesn't create extra profile that needs filling in. What edging actually changes is retention, not quantity: The Yard, a Sunshine Coast landscaping supplier, notes proper edging "prevents mulch from washing onto paths and lawn after rain", so an edged bed keeps the load you put down instead of shedding it at the margins, while an unedged bed's mulch thins out at the edges over time and needs topping up sooner, not because the first delivery was undersized.
