Where the number comes from
A shower's real cost is set by the showerhead, not the hot water tank. Every litre that reaches your skin has to be lifted from mains temperature (around 20°C) to a comfortable shower temperature (around 40°C), whether that litre came straight out of the tank or was blended in cold at the mixer, mixing doesn't make the heating cheaper, it just spreads that same 20°C lift across a bigger total flow. Either way the sum comes out the same: about 0.023 kWh has to be added for every litre that leaves the rose. Multiply that by your showerhead's flow rate, the minutes you're in there, and your state's electricity rate, and you've got a real per-minute figure rather than a guess.
Our own hot water calculator works from the same 20°C lift, just measured at the tank instead of the shower rose: 50 litres a person a day, 2.3 kWh to heat it. The table below uses today's legal-minimum showerhead, 9 litres a minute. In New South Wales that's about 7¢ a minute, 27¢ for a 4-minute shower, 54¢ for an 8-minute one, cheaper in Tasmania and the ACT, dearer in South Australia, same shape everywhere.
What this costs, state by state
A standard 9 litre-a-minute showerhead, the maximum flow the Plumbing Code of Australia allows on anything sold since June 2022 (a 3-star WELS rating), heating water from a 20°C mains supply to a 40°C shower temperature.

The showerhead matters more than the shower
Nine litres a minute is the legal ceiling today, not what's actually bolted to the wall in most Australian bathrooms. Older, unrestricted showerheads run 15 to 25 litres a minute, more than double the modern limit, while a genuinely water-efficient 5-star head brings that down to around 6 litres. On an 8-minute shower at NSW's rate, that's 90¢ on an old head, 54¢ on today's 9 L/min standard, and 36¢ on an efficient one, the exact same shower, priced two and a half times apart, before anyone's touched the tap or a timer.
Showering shorter helps too, just less than the showerhead does. Yarra Valley Water's own figures put the average Melbourne shower at 7.1 minutes against a 4-minute water-wise target, and say closing that gap saves a household around $280 a year across water and energy combined, a bigger number than the electricity-only figures above, because it's also counting the water bill this page isn't pricing. The two levers stack: a short shower under an old showerhead can still cost more than a long one under an efficient head.
Your own tap isn't always 20°C
The 20°C mains figure above is a national average, not a fixed constant. The NHMRC's Australian Drinking Water Guidelines put reticulated supply temperatures anywhere from 10°C to 30°C depending on location and season, and 20°C sits right in the middle of that spread. Run the same 9 L/min showerhead at either end of that range instead, and the per-minute cost moves with it, before anyone's touched the showerhead or the shower length: toward 3–4¢ where the tap starts closer to 30°C, toward 9–12¢ where it starts closer to 10°C. A Victorian shower in July and a Queensland shower in February aren't heating the same 20°C lift, even on an identical showerhead and bill.
Common questions
How much does a shower cost per minute in Australia?
With a standard 9-litre-a-minute showerhead, the maximum allowed on anything sold since June 2022, heating the water costs roughly 6–8¢ a minute depending on your state's electricity rate: 6¢ in Tasmania and the ACT, 8¢ in South Australia. A 4-minute shower runs 23–32¢; an 8-minute one runs 46–64¢.
Does a water-efficient showerhead actually save money?
Yes, more than showering shorter does on its own. Swapping an old 15 L/min showerhead for a 5-star, 6 L/min one cuts the electricity cost of an 8-minute shower from about 90¢ to 36¢ in NSW, and separately saves a family of four an estimated $210–$315 a year on the water bill alone.
How long is the average Australian shower?
Around 7 minutes. Yarra Valley Water's own data has the Melbourne average at 7.1 minutes, up from 6.5 minutes a decade ago. Both the water-wise target and the shorter-shower savings above are built around cutting that to 4 minutes.
Does the water's starting temperature change these numbers?
Yes, by more than the state-rate spread already in the table. The 20°C mains figure above is the middle of the NHMRC's official range for Australian reticulated water, 10–30°C depending on location and season. Near the cold end, the same 9 L/min showerhead's per-minute cost roughly doubles to 9–12¢; near the warm end it roughly halves to 3–4¢, on the identical showerhead and bill.
Does the type of hot water system change what a shower costs?
Yes, a heat pump system heats the same litre for roughly a third of the electricity an electric storage tank uses, which lowers every figure above by the same ratio.
