Is a variable speed pool pump worth it?

This is the piece both leave out: what a variable speed pump actually costs to buy over a single speed one, and how long that extra cost takes to pay for itself.

Why the gap is so large

Pump physics rewards running slower for longer: a motor's power draw scales with roughly the cube of its speed, so halving the speed doesn't halve the power draw, it cuts it to around an eighth. A variable speed pump can filter the same water more slowly across a longer window and still hit a full turnover, while a single speed pump has one setting, full power, every time it runs. Since 1 October 2022 every pool pump sold in Australia has needed a GEMS Regulator energy rating label, and pulling the government's own product registration database directly for this guide shows the result in real registered models, not a marketing claim: the median currently-registered single speed pump carries just 1 star, with a labelled test-standard consumption of about 1,270 kWh a year, against a median 6 stars and about 490 kWh for variable speed, roughly 61% less on the standard test used to award the star rating itself. Real households run a pump for different hours than that test assumes, which is why the table above uses our own calculator's hours instead (a bigger, 68% gap, since the calculator's default hours are longer than the test's), but the direction and the scale, well over half, holds either way. The regulator's own published estimate, an 8-star pump against a 2-star one, puts the saving at over $540 a year, in the same range this page's table gives for our calculator's specific pairing.

What it costs to switch, and how fast it pays back

Bunnings currently lists a Baracuda 1.0HP single speed pump at $498 and the Baracuda Variable Speed Pump, same brand and a comparable residential capacity, at $1066, a $568 premium for going variable speed instead of single speed. Against the running-cost gap in the table above, $450 (ACT) to $626 (SA) a year at our calculator's default 8 hours a day in summer and 4 in winter, that premium pays for itself in 11 to 15 months in every state, fastest in South Australia's high reference rate, slowest in the ACT's comparatively cheap one. Run the pump more than our calculator's default, over a long hot summer especially, and the payback comes even faster, since the whole saving scales with hours run. Run it less, because your pool is smaller or you've already trimmed the hours using our companion run-time guide, and the payback stretches out a little, though rarely past a single pool season. Either way, a single speed pump due for replacement is one of the rare cases on this site where the more efficient option pays for itself inside a year almost everywhere, not just eventually.
