How many hours should your pool pump run?

Our pool pump running cost calculator above asks for your hours a day, but doesn't tell you what that number should be. Here's the actual method, sourced from the pool industry rather than a guess: work it out from turnover, adjust for the season and your climate, and see what an hour either way genuinely costs.

Work it out from turnover, not a fixed number

The actual target is turnover, not a number of hours: run the pump long enough to filter one full pool volume through the system, and the water stays clear. SPASA, the pool industry's own association, states directly on its own site that summer filtration should run 8 to 10 hours a day, and Zodiac Australia, one of the country's largest pump manufacturers, gives the fuller picture: 8 to 10 hours in summer, 4 to 6 in winter, and a full turnover inside 4 to 6 hours either way. That's a wider range than our own calculator's FAQ gives (6 to 8 hours in summer, 3 to 4 in winter), both figures are commonly quoted, and the honest answer is to lean toward the fuller SPASA/Zodiac range unless you've actually timed your own pool's turnover, since running short is the mistake that costs you in algae and chemicals, not electricity.

Zodiac's own rule of thumb for adjusting to the weather is simple: add roughly an hour of filtration for every 10°C the day's temperature sits above 15°C, since warmer water grows algae faster and needs more turnovers to keep up. That's also the real reason the same hours-a-day advice doesn't fit every state evenly, a hot, humid Queensland or Northern Territory summer sits toward the top of the range, a milder Victorian or South Australian one nearer the bottom, and the gap is climate, not guesswork.

What an extra hour actually costs

Hours multiply the cost directly, so trimming one changes the bill by exactly that much, but the pump type you're running it on changes how much that hour is worth. On a typical single-speed pump (1.1 kW, the same class our pool pump calculator's own dropdown uses), one extra hour a day works out to $110 (ACT) to $153 (SA) a year at current rates. The identical hour on a variable-speed pump's eco setting (0.35 kW) costs about a third of that, $35 to $49 a year, because the eco setting simply draws less power to move the same water, the table above has every state's version of both.

That's the practical takeaway for anyone weighing up trimming an hour against upgrading the pump: on a single-speed pump, cutting an hour a day saves real money. A variable-speed pump on eco makes the hours question far less consequential in the first place, since even a full extra hour on eco costs a third of what the same hour costs on single speed.
